What is it about?
Compulsory long-term care insurance does not cover all care costs. Supplementary policies may offer agreed daily payments, cost reimbursement or a care pension.

How does supplementary long-term care insurance work?
Compulsory long-term care insurance often pays only part of care costs. Supplementary cover can reduce the gap between benefits, income and actual needs. Recognised care grades and policy conditions usually determine payment. We consider home and residential care, savings, rising costs and long-term premium affordability.
Daily long-term care allowance insurance
An agreed daily amount is paid according to the recognised care grade. The money can generally be used freely without submitting individual expense receipts. Check lower care grades, home care, indexation and premium waiver. Premiums may rise, and cancellation usually leaves no savings balance.
Long-term care annuity insurance
A care annuity pays an agreed regular benefit when the policy definition of care dependency is met. Guarantees, care grade assessment and surplus participation differ between products. Premiums and flexibility may differ from daily allowance plans. Review guaranteed benefits, surrender values and the consequences of interrupting payments.
Pflege-Bahr: state-supported supplementary cover
Eligible policies receive a five-euro monthly subsidy with at least ten euros paid personally. Access is available to adults in compulsory care insurance who have not previously received its care benefits. Health screening and risk loadings are excluded; a waiting period of up to five years is allowed. Subsidy alone does not ensure adequate cover.
